Why are you forcing the use of --disable-perl-regexp
in the grep config?  I depend on this functionality and
it used to be enabled.  It would be nice to at least have
a USE setting available to enable it.

perhaps another solution would be to disallow pcre if static was set

which would break everyone who has USE=pcre and /usr on a sep partition
