I'm using patch 2.5.9 and portage 2.0.51.22-r3

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. run the command USE="debug cairo examples" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge
gnu-classpath
Actual Results:  
gnu-classpath do not compile

Expected Results:  
successfully apply patch, compile and install

It seems that the stable patch does not like the dssi patch file. I added a
dependency on the latest version of patch. Thanks for reporting.

run `dos2unix` on the file and that should fix it
