I have a modular X - read
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/xorg-x11/migrating_to_modular_x_howto.txt

giflib does not support modular X yet.

where needs steallarium giflib? *confused*

Stellarium does not support modular X either (and tons of things in portage
don't support it). 

I have emerged now Stellarium without any failure. When I start it, I get
