Description FieldySnuts 2005-09-25 00:13:09 UTC
I am using udev-070, and I cannot seem to find my DVD drive anywhere. My kernel
does see it:

hdd: PLEXTOR DVDR PX-708A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

But:

ls: /dev/dvd: No such file or directory

Other possibilities that one might expect, such as cdrom, dvdrw, cdroms* do not
exist. In fact, find /dev | grep -i dvd reveals only:

 /dev/pktcdvd
 /dev/pktcdvd/control
 /dev/.udevdb/class@misc@pktcdvd

And the same for cdr reveals nothing.

I have repeatedly tried udevstart, and even rebooting, to no avail. This leaves
me without access to my DVD drive, therefore I cannot read or write CD's or DVD's.

I didn't want to think this was a problem with udev or its config, but I have
run out of ideas, as have folks in #gentoo.

Pardon me being tired. I meant to cover this in the beginning, not /dev/dvd:

 ls /dev/hdd
ls: /dev/hdd: No such file or directory
Comment 2 Mark Knecht 2005-09-27 11:33:05 UTC
I am seeing some sort of change in the handling of DVD & CDRW drives just
recently also. This has happened on at least 3 machines: In my case the drives
are there but no longer under /dev/cdroms. I'm running udev-068-r1

mark@lightning ~ $ ls /dev/cdr
cdrom cdrom1 cdrw cdrw1
mark@lightning ~ $ ls /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom
mark@lightning ~ $ ls -al /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Sep 27 00:52 /dev/cdrom -> hda
mark@lightning ~ $ ls -al /dev/cdrom1
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Sep 27 00:52 /dev/cdrom1 -> hdb
mark@lightning ~ $ ls -al /dev/cdrw
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Sep 27 00:52 /dev/cdrw -> hda
mark@lightning ~ $ ls -al /dev/cdrw1
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 Sep 27 00:52 /dev/cdrw1 -> hdb
mark@lightning ~ $

They are mountable and do run, but this has required at least a temporary change
to my fstab file.

For comment #2, what has changed? Your drives are still visible, right?
Comment 4 Greg Kroah-Hartman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-28 02:30:00 UTC
For comment #1, does your disk show up at all in /sys/block/ ? If not, there's
nothing that udev can do about it, it's a kernel configuration issue.

What does 'ls /sys/block/' show?
Comment 5 FieldySnuts 2005-09-28 06:23:41 UTC
I have gone on a little information gathering run across four systems. All of
them found the cd or dvd drive at boot.

Except for Quasar, they are all using plextor IDE cd or dvd writers.

The first line of each is the system name, please refer to it by that if you
want any further info on any of these systems:

+ fire-eyes (the original bug report was for this system)
 - udev-070
 - kernel 2.6.13.2-grsec-20050925 (changed from bug report time)
 - /dev/hdd is not in /sys/block/
 - DVD drive cannot be found or used

+ linux2
 - udev-070
 - kernel 2.6.14-rc2-mm1
 - /dev/hda is not in /sys/block/
 - DVD drive cannot be found or used

+ badger
 - udev-068
 - kernel 2.6.13.2-grsec-20050925
 - /dev/hda is not in /sys/block/
 - DVD drive cannot be found or used

+ quasar
 - udev-068-r1
 - kernel 2.6.13.2-grsec-20050925
 - /dev/hdc is in /sys/block/
 - CD drive is found, and can be used
Comment 6 FieldySnuts 2005-09-28 06:28:53 UTC
I am very sorry, I don't know what the heck is wrong with me.

CORRECTION:

+ badger
 - udev-068
 - kernel 2.6.13.2-grsec-20050925
 - /dev/hda is not in /sys/block/
 - DVD drive cannot be found or used

Should be:

+ badger
 -udev-068
 - kernel 2.6.13.2-grsec-20050925
 - /dev/hda is in /sys/block/
 - DVD drive can be found, and used
Comment 7 Kay Sievers 2005-10-01 06:31:22 UTC
is ide-cd loaded?
Comment 8 FieldySnuts 2005-10-01 07:15:55 UTC
On "fire-eyes" (only system I have access too right now), it was not loaded.
Once I loaded it, /dev/dvd showed up.

I never had to manually load this before, I wonder what changed?

Anyway I guess that probably shows that it's not a udev issue, but whatever
automatically loads modules according to hardware found changed.

I think this could be closed now, if Greg thinks it should be. Thanks for the
tip, Kay.
