Description:   Opened: 2005-09-17 00:51 0000
yesterday noticed that any wine programs in new X servers refused to run, but
when started from a long running X, they worked fine. After an X restart (for
other reasons), wine programs refuse to run at all for same reasons as above.

A fairly large amount of stuff had been updated since the last working X server
started, here's a list from genlop of updates recent enough to be in the problem
window:

I have some fairly aggressive c-flags, but they weren't changed between the
working wine/X and the non-working combo so unless an update disagrees with one,
I don't think its them. Will try without though, just to see.

ps: this is extremely unlikely to be an out of memory error, which is what it
looks like - I currently have about 700Mb of system ram free, and if i knew how
to check my gpu's memory usage i would. Also, only wine dies with this error.
everything else seems to be quite happy.

system: amd athlon xp 2400+, 1024mb ddr dual channel ram, nvidia fx5200 128mb
gpu.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. install pre- september 10 2005 portage snapshot
2. emerge everything necessary
3. xinit 'wine /somewhere/something.exe'
4. emerge sync && emerge -avtDNu world
5. xinit 'wine /somewhere/samething.exe'

doesn't make any difference if a previously working configuration is in place or
not.

------- Comment #1 From Triffid Hunter 2005-09-17 01:20:12 0000 -------
when compiled with very basic CFLAGS (-O2 -pipe -march=athlon-xp):

triffid@lucienne ~ $ winecfg
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 53 (X_CreatePixmap)
Serial number of failed request: 12783
Current serial number in output stream: 12785
triffid@lucienne ~ $

------- Comment #2 From Anders Hellgren 2005-09-17 06:00:22 0000 -------
I have noticed the same thing. As far as I can tell it is caused by the
BadAlloc
added to programs/Xserver/dix/dispatch.c due to bug 105688. I haven't tried to
pull out that change since there appears to be a good reason for it. There is
already an upstream bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3336
