yesterday noticed that any wine programs in new X servers refused to run, but when started from a long running X, they worked fine. After an X restart (for other reasons), wine programs refuse to run at all for same reasons as above. A fairly large amount of stuff had been updated since the last working X server started, here's a list from genlop of updates recent enough to be in the problem window: Tue Sep 13 02:41:29 2005 >>> sys-apps/portage-2.0.52-r1 Tue Sep 13 16:01:54 2005 >>> app-office/openoffice-bin-1.9.128 Thu Sep 15 20:00:26 2005 >>> x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r3 Thu Sep 15 20:01:24 2005 >>> sys-apps/lm_sensors-2.9.2 Fri Sep 16 11:58:14 2005 >>> dev-perl/yaml-0.39 Fri Sep 16 11:58:27 2005 >>> dev-perl/IO-Zlib-1.04 Fri Sep 16 11:58:40 2005 >>> dev-perl/IO-String-1.06 Fri Sep 16 11:58:55 2005 >>> dev-perl/Archive-Tar-1.24 Fri Sep 16 11:59:13 2005 >>> dev-perl/module-build-0.26.11 Fri Sep 16 11:59:35 2005 >>> perl-core/File-Spec-3.06 Fri Sep 16 12:18:40 2005 >>> media-libs/libdc1394-1.0.0 Fri Sep 16 12:23:43 2005 >>> media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050906 Fri Sep 16 13:47:10 2005 >>> x11-libs/wxGTK-2.6.1 Sat Sep 17 11:55:05 2005 >>> media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050906 Sat Sep 17 16:20:33 2005 >>> app-office/openoffice-bin-1.9.128 Sat Sep 17 16:21:12 2005 >>> media-libs/libcddb-0.9.5 Sat Sep 17 16:22:00 2005 >>> media-libs/sdl-sound-1.0.1-r2 Sat Sep 17 16:22:28 2005 >>> media-plugins/xine-vcdx-1_rc1-r1 Sat Sep 17 16:23:22 2005 >>> media-video/vcdimager-0.7.22 Sat Sep 17 16:23:36 2005 >>> net-p2p/azureus-bin-2.3.0.4 Sat Sep 17 16:38:30 2005 >>> dev-java/sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.04 Sat Sep 17 17:23:33 2005 >>> app-emulation/wine-20050830 I have some fairly aggressive c-flags, but they weren't changed between the working wine/X and the non-working combo so unless an update disagrees with one, I don't think its them. Will try without though, just to see. ps: this is extremely unlikely to be an out of memory error, which is what it looks like - I currently have about 700Mb of system ram free, and if i knew how to check my gpu's memory usage i would. Also, only wine dies with this error. everything else seems to be quite happy. system: amd athlon xp 2400+, 1024mb ddr dual channel ram, nvidia fx5200 128mb gpu. I have noticed the same thing. As far as I can tell it is caused by the BadAlloc added to programs/Xserver/dix/dispatch.c due to bug 105688. I haven't tried to pull out that change since there appears to be a good reason for it. There is already an upstream bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3336
