The LDAP guide is nice, but is for someone who want to setup user and groups authentication from LDAP. I just want to figure out how to setup a shared addressbook between my three home machines. I guess I don't have to install the PAM stuff, but it would be nice to have the minimum install for addressbook, and then a seperate section to support user/group authentication. kindest regards
That guide says "Gentoo Guide to OpenLDAP Authentication: This guide introduces the basics of LDAP and shows you how to setup OpenLDAP for authentication purposes between a group of Gentoo boxes.". I have never done it, but I think that using LDAP for addressbook is quite straightforward and not so much Gentoo specific. I vote for WONTFIX.

Because (at least IMHO) it is "too easy to be documented" - we don't have guide for setting up Postfix with Amavis, it is part of huge document describing user management and webmail as well. What would the original poster suggest to document? IMHO the process is quite straightforward - install LDAP stuff, set up some scheme / data structure for contact storing and configure his MUAs to use LDAP as an address book...

Thanks for the energetic responses. Most of what I am suggesting can be had by _reorganizing_ the information on the page so that it would be useful to someone who just wants to set up a shared addressbook with OpenLDAP. Maybe it might make sense as a different HOWTO - don't know. kindest regards

Any input on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated. :)
Odd that my old post should show up at the top of the planet; that post was from so long ago... Anyways, I would love to help anyone willing to put together an official Gentoo guide for putting together an LDAP address book. I am quite familiar with guidexml, too. The question here, though, is really: should we really be hosting an LDAP-addressbook guide? I think, sure. Why not? There are plenty of (subsections of) guides out there for things I'd call trivial (setting up MySQL, anyone?). Certainly someone else didn't think it was trivial. I didn't think that setting up an LDAP address book was trivial, but that's coming from someone who knew nothing about LDAP. Took me a few hours of going around and reading up on how LDAP works, how to query, how schemas are defined, etc. I now have LDAP set up for a shared address book including those cute little pictures that show up for contacts in apple's Address Book.app. If not an official Gentoo guide, then at least a post to my blog is in order, detailing how I did it. So regardless, I'll be putting together a guide. Clearly, the answer to the question above is not mine to make. I do hope, though, that I've provided useful input. I'm happy to help regardless of the decision.

Is this bug still valid? The guide is marked invalid and unmaintained...
Sorry about the long update delays. This is my last weekend as a college student. I will, without a doubt, be able to get to writing the promised guide within the next week (after graduation).

You might want to get in touch with him. Good luck with exams/whatever :)
The guide was marked as obsolete. If you want to write a new one, please open a separate bug for it.
