Any program that uses fontconfig such as alsamixergui returns:

Fontconfig error: line 17: not well-formed (invalid token)
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
Segmentation fault

I don't think I changed any config files, but I'm not even sure which one it is
complaining about.

Set your locale:

 # zic -l Africa/Johannesburg

and then remerge fontconfig:

 # emerge fontconfig
