emerge --update system terminates on man-1.6 package

initial error message:

gripes.h:1:23 gripedefs.h:no such file or directory

find / -name 'gripedefs*' yields no results
is there a header file missing from the ebuild?

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge --update system
2.
3.(assuming previous version of man package installed)

Actual Results:  
emerge terminates

Expected Results:  
should have updated to man-1.6!
