There are a lot of "stock rules" to snort and it makes the /etc/snort directory cluttered. Please consider moving the rules to a subdirectory /etc/snort/rules. This will leave only the config and example files in /etc/snort. It would also allow users to make a subdir for their own rules and CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK for the stock snort rules to get automatically updated as they change with the distrubtion.
In cvs, in snort-2.3.3-r1. Thanks for reporting!
