Hi, I would find it nice it the ebuild for sys-apps/star would install mt e.g. 
as mt.star. I find this mt very useful, because it works on remote drives.

I have just added -r1 to portage which installs mt as mt.star.

If you are interessted in remote-tapes, the developer of mtx told me to have a 
look at iscsi. A quick search with google has revealed two implementations for 
linux. Maybe that's something for a new ebuild. ;)
