This is the same bug as #59849, except that one is for firefox. Since I couldn't find anything for thunderbird and freetype-2.1.9 I thought it would be good to open a new bug. I imagine the patch posted at #59849 for firefox could be adapted for Thunderbird.

Found a patch for this thanks to the folks at LFS. Should work for freetype
2.1.8 and 2.1.9. Should apply cleanly to both thunderbird 0.8 and 0.9
