I've been bitten by this too. Apparently the issue is that PrintGifError() has disappeared in giflib v4.2 and been replaced by GifErrorString. fbida handles that point for giflib v5 (which has a slightly different prototype for GifErrorString), but not for previous versions such as v4.2.3 that gentoo is proposing right now. Attached patch fixes the linking issue, but I haven't done any test beyond the installation of the package.
