Fixed in 343.22-r1. Thanks for the report! In -r2 I added /etc/conf.d/nvidia-persistenced as well. Would it be possible to fix this for nvidia-drivers-340.32 too? 343.22 is the current version in the short lived branch, whereas 340.32 is the latest version in the long lived branch.
