Description John J Cruz 2004-04-29 17:27:45 UTC
When I boot with the x86 2004.1 "minimal" CD, the onboard NIC in my ASUS A7V8X-MX motherboard is not found. In 2004.0, the onboard NIC was correctly detected and configured.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Burn a copy of the 2004.1 "minimal" CD from the downloadable ISO image.
2. Using an ASUS A7V8X-MX motherboard, boot from the 2004.1 CD.
3. The Network will not be detected during the boot cycle.
Note: As mentioned, the 2004.0 image *DOES* detect and support this NIC.

Actual Results:
NIC is not detected.

Expected Results:
Detected and setup the NIC, run DHCPCD, etc.

I can use the 2004.0 CD to get started, but this is frustrating. Why was
support for this NIC withdrawn? This also leads me to wonder if support for the
other VIA chipset features has been withdrawn as well.

Additional Information: Reproduced this same issue using an ASUS A7N266-VM motherboard. This does NOT use the VIA chipset, but is another "onboard" NIC. This motherboard uses the nVidia NFORCE chipset. The problem is not chipset specific. Support for certain NICs seems to have been withdrawn from the 2004.1 image that were present in the 2004.0 image. -jjc

The forcedeth.o and via-rhine.o network modules are available. Manually modprobe'ing the NIC will turn it on. Still unsure why it's no longer autodetecting. --jjc
