Which version of ffmpeg are you using? Can you try later versions of vlc? =media-video/ffmpeg-2.0 (~amd64) vlc-2.0.7 exits with the following error message during configure: configure: error: libavcodec versions 55 and later are not supported yet. It seems a version block for ffmpeg-2.0 needs into vlc (and mplayer too) at the moment.
