For testing I built it by hand, installed over old one. It works fine after you restart with default configuration from /etc/xdg/awesome and re-add your custom changes from old config file on top (with minor syntax edits). It doesn't seem to require special additional packages or anything.

Some 3rd party extensions are broken (e.g. awesompd) and require more extensive fixing.

Probably a simple bump would be enough (dependencies seem unchanged), with extra post-install notification that the user _should_ restart with a default configuration, as the old one will most likely be broken.
