i tried to:

emerge rsync
emerge --clean rsync
downloading from different servers
moving the .tar.gz file
movinf the .ebuild file
deleting the .tar.gz file
deleting the .ebuild file
using different mirrors
emerge gtk+
emerge --update system
unmerge gtk+

i have tried several different combinations of all of these. the bottom line is
i always end up with the same errors as shown above icon_sad.gif
