Description Robert Cabrera 2012-08-12 20:39:31 UTC
This is to request a version bump for gstreamer and all gst-plugins. Current version in portage are over 15 months old.

Current versions in portage are 0.10.35 or older for these applications.

Currently released as stable upstream are 0.11.93. Most other distros are shipping with these newer versions. Why are we so far behind?

These are especially important for KDE users as phonon-vlc is buggy, phonon-xine is no longer supported, and phonon-gstreamer is considered the default stable backend to phonon.

I tried updated gstreamer and the gst-plugins in my personal overlay but ran into considerable problems due to eclass conflicts with existing portage ebuilds.

Please update new ebuilds into the tree even if they need to be hard masked.

TIA

Reproducible: Always

Why did you mark this as a duplicate?

That report was for a bump to the now stale and no longer supported upstream version 0.10.36. At the time of this posting the version I requested was for 0.11.93 which was a pre-release beta for the new API.

Since this posting, upstream has released 4 newer versions and has officially gone stable with the 1.0 release.

The current stable version is 1.0.1. It is being actively developed and maintained. Several distros are already shipping with version 1.0, others have 1.0.1 in their testing or unstable repositories.

Why are Gentoo devs wasting time and energy working on an 8 month old version that's dead upstream and is incompatible with the new API? This doesn't make any sense to me.

Forget 0.10.36 and get 1.0.x out. That's what we need, especially KDE users as gstreamer is now considered the default/preferred backend for phonon.
