just updated to latest distcc, and noticed it wanted to change
DISTCC_DIR="/var/tmp/distccd" as opposed to:
DISTCC_DIR="/var/run/distccd" whereas the directory it actually
installs is /var/run/distccd

Actually, DISTCC_DIR has nothing to do with the daemon and will be removed from
the init and conf files.

although, reopen if your problem is an error with DISTCC_DIR on the client.
