The current ebuild for KBibTeX (app-text/kbibtex-0.4) allows you to either build the officially released sources or trunk by using -9999 as version number. Attached patch will add a third case, where the most recent branch for a given version number. E.g. to build the most recent code from the 0.4 branch, specify version number 0.4.9999. This naming scheme is similar to the one used for official KDE packages and allows to test upcoming stable releases.
