Yes, python is in our base system, but this is actually to make deptracking work good. As things are, if you do a "cleanish" system upgrade, newt will be installed with python 2.2 and then 2.3 will be installed. to avoid cases like this its nicest if newt was to have a dependency on python, thereby making the updater- runs unnecessary. hrmm .. we don't maintain newt, but no one does.
... despite that, i've fixed the python version so it only builds against on the current one.
