I made it because Blender with the cycles render engine needs it.

thanks for this. just made building blender-cycles much easier. you might want to use the git-2 eclass. i put it into my overlay at: http://code.google.com/p/mistafunk-gentoo-overlay/source/browse/#git%2Fmedia-gfx%2Fopenimageio
