Description Cyprien Nicolas (fulax) 2011-03-01 13:23:38 UTC
Hi,

I have two monitors, with a desktop size of 3840x1200. Since an update in the mid-February (the stabilization of libdrm and xf86-video-nouveau), X doesn't display anymore my desktop, nor the gdm login screen. No errors in logs.

I tested with different kernels, 2.6.35-r7, 2.6.36-r5 and 2.6.37-r1, and both x86 and amd64 base system (with a x86_64 kernel) but same result.

The x86 system has been tested from a fresh install of i686-current-stage3 (setup for ~arch).

It seems that something corrupts the graphics when the resolution is too large.
Playing with xrandr, using nouveau-0.0.16_pre20101130 I was able to display 3360x1050, but not 3840x1200, while xrandr --query says "maximum is 4096 x 4096"

I downgraded to =x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_pre20101010 (which required the downgrade to =x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.22 and =media-libs/mesa-7.9), and everything now works fine.

Portage 2.2.0_alpha25 (default/linux/x86/10.0/desktop, gcc-4.4.4, glibc-2.11.2-r3, 2.6.37-gentoo-r1 x86_64)

Comment 1 Mario Bachmann 2011-04-01 19:15:20 UTC
same problem with:
  x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_pre20101130
  x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.5
  x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.9
  media-libs/mesa-7.10.1
  x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.23

does not work: "xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --right-of VGA-1"

does work: "xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --below VGA-1"

are there any news, how to use booth displays beside each other ?!
Comment 2 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2011-04-02 01:26:23 UTC
I is probably a good idea to check upstream's bugzilla at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ if a bug report for your issue already exists, and if not, create one. Then add the URL to this bug.
Comment 3 Cyprien Nicolas (fulax) 2011-04-27 13:56:56 UTC
Thanks Mario for having reported it upstream.
Updating URL accordingly.
Comment 4 Cyprien Nicolas (fulax) 2011-07-22 16:41:31 UTC
Hello,

Upstream patch has been merged in linux-3.0-rc3 a few weeks ago.

I just tested with the fresh =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.0 and the problem looks fixed for me.

Do you want to keep that bug opened until a newer kernel gets stabilized?
Comment 5 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2011-08-20 16:57:05 UTC
As gentoo-sources-3.0 is now in the tree, I'll mark this as fixed.
