This was fixed in the upstream repository and dev-util/dwarves-9999 builds fine. Relevant patch (which applies cleanly on v1.8) attached.
I asked Arnaldo to make a new release, sincerely I have little interest in keeping around 1.8, given its age... I had enough crashes with that before, and if now it doesn't even build, either he makes a release, or I make a snapshot. Will know tonight which one.
