When doing a large emerge, for example, after installing the system I usually install my window manager, which depends on xfree-base. I usually don't monitor the build process (it takes several hours), so I've never seen the einfo's attached to X (which contain important information). Portage should hold off on outputting these to the buffer until the end of a compilation.
