We should stabilize new version, but that will require also ffmpeg, vlc (A rc), and avidemux (A snapshot). From these I can see vlc possibly needs more time. I might be wrong, but it seems that the current stable vlc works fine with the next-unstable ffmpeg and x264 (versions 0.5_p19928 and 0.0.20090629).
