There is a patch (http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/iconv/4.58/pine-iconv-7e.patch)
for the current version of Pine that adds support for UTF-8 to this MUA. I think
it's a good idea to make it one of the default patches. It can be really
annoying to read UTF-8-encoded mail with a client that doesn't support UTF-8.

ok, I'm on it if no one beats me to it.

Any progress with this one? It should be pretty simple - just include the
patch into the ebuild..

Ok, I have a new pine ebuild that contains a bunch of additions including
this one. I'll put it in shortly (as soon as the maildir stuff is sorted
out).

Added to pine-4.58-r3.

------- Comment #5 From Artem Baguinski 2004-01-13 06:20:30 0000 -------
the patch in pine-4.58-r3 isn't the one suggested by SpanKY.
the newest version would be:

http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/iconv/4.58/pine-iconv-8k.patch.gz

suggested new ebuild

this one really adds UTF-8 support to pine

------- Comment #7 From Thomas Eckert 2004-02-04 11:01:45 0000 -------
I totaly agree with comments #5 and #6 -- I did not find this bug in the first
place and added exactly the same patch to my test-version (and removed the
*singlebyte*-patch). I use that version for 3 weeks now and did not notice any
problems so far.
it seems that a new version was released (http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/iconv/
8m in the 4.58 directory) -- no experience with there, sorry.

can we reopen this bug to add propper UTF-8 support to pine?

added utf-8 support patch, conditioned by "unicode" use flag

When "unicode" flag is set, this ebuild applies the utf-8 patch from

http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/FAQ.html

instead of collection of Chappa's patches (the utf-8 patch already includes
them).

Unfortunately, the utf-8 patch is not versioned, and, therefore, has to be
versioned externally (similarly to how it's done with Chappa's patches), which
I did not do.

------- Comment #9 From SpanKY 2006-07-31 21:51:33 0000 -------
looks like this was never fixed

------- Comment #10 From Marek Wróbel 2007-04-20 22:30:07 0000 -------
I've recently found UTF-8 patches for pine:

http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/FAQ.html

There is a big patch integrated with Eduardo Chappa's patches. I changed an
ebuild to use this one instead of *-chappa-all.patch and the only thing that
didn't work was pine-4.61-subjectlength.patch. After removing it pine compiled
cleanly and seems to work without problems.

Could this patch be included in the next revision of pine?

Looks like Pine has gone away, to be replaced by Alpine.

"IMPORTANT:Development of this patch has been discontinued in favour of the
successor of pine, called Alpine which is licensed under the Apache license and
is thus Free Software. The public beta test of Alpine has started in November
2006, and it supports UTF-8. Instead of this patch, I encourage everybody to
try the latest beta of Alpine and report any bugs on the Alpine mailing list. "

Alpine is in Sunrise, and bug 229947 is a request to formally retire Pine and
replace it with Alpine.
