I just notified upstream and it was a bug he was able to find and fix on the spot. So, this is fixed in the upstream repository. Will you accept a patch into portage so this doesn't have to be broken until the next release? As long as you're going to patch openal-1.9.563 in portage (and I think you should since OSS playback is basically broken, here's a patch that includes another fix for a long-standing OSS bug which was made more severe in 1.9.563 (terminating playback) which was also fixed upstream just a few minutes ago.
