gave compiling octave a try (free MatLab replacement, i.e. numeric computing).
only thing I changed was to add "~sparc" to KEYWORDS.

compiled fine (including dependencies: 5 hours, 40 minutes on my ultra 5
first _very_ basic tests seem to indicate that it works .. so it could at least
be added to ~sparc

Added ~sparc keyword.  Thanks for the bugreport :)
