sys-apps/man-1.6f-r2 shows wrong accented letters while using on utf8 console (not konsole or similar apps, just default session without xdm).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge sys-apps/man with nls useflag and LOCALE set to it_IT.utf8
2. type man maildir (non-existent)
3. accented letters are shown as "?"

Actual Results:  
Accented letters are not shown.

Expected Results:  
Accented letters should be displayed correctly.

I've a .diff for the mess.it file contained inside man sources.
