Hiya Willard, could you please try re-syncing your tree and attempting to emerge vmware-modules again? A couple of patches were added last night that should solve your problem, I'd just like to check if they do or not...

Ok, well, that's progress at least. I'll take a look at that new issue with vmnet when I get a chance. In the meantime you guys should be ok, since I won't be removing vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 any time soon...
Comment 10 Paul Varner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-13 21:38:11 UTC
It also fails on 2.6.24-gentoo-r8, which is what I have installed.
Comment 11 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-13 21:40:01 UTC
Yep, and Gengor reminded me that 1.0.0.15-r1 won't solve the problem, since they both use the same patchsets. 5:\ I'll have a look at the issue later tonight and see if I can't get a quick fix out...

Anyone wanna maintain some vmware-modules? Only slightly used, going cheap?
Comment 12 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-14 00:08:03 UTC
Ok, I've just applied a patch for this, please wait for the servers to update, then try re-syncing and re-emerging. Please let me know if it hits any more errors, or if it works ok now...
Comment 13 Willard Dawson 2009-01-14 11:51:56 UTC
I waited overnight and synced just now, but still get errors same as #5 -- did your last patch go out, yet?

Comment 14 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-14 12:51:52 UTC
Yes, it should have...

http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/app-emulation/vmware-modules/files/patches/vmnet/030_all_kernel-2.6.27.patch?r1=1.2&r2=1.3

Can you check your /usr/portage/vmware-modules/files/patches/vmnet/030_all_kernel-2.6.27.patch, right at the start it should be obvious whether you've got revision 1.2 or 1.3 (there should be a check for > 2.6.25). If you've got the old version then the mirror just hadn't synced up (bit odd, but not too much to worry about).

If you have the new version, then it's gonna take more effort (it might be that the kernel classes 2.6.25.8 as > 2.6.25). If that's so, you could do me a big favour by just changing the patch to say < 2.6.26 rather than > 2.6.25. Afterwards, make sure you haven't changed anything else, and then run "ebuild /usr/portage/vmware-modules/vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r2.ebuild manifest". Once that's done, you should be able to re-emerge it and see if that fixed the problem...

I followed the directions as in comment #14 (I have the new patch - revision 1.3 and a kernel < 2.6.26) with the only difference that the path to the repository reads /usr/portage/app-emulation/vmware-modules/...

Unfortunately, the error is still there

Hiya Willard, even if we get that problem fixed, there's a couple more I spotted that are gonna bite us later on, so hang tight, and I'll see if I can't rustle up a more comprehensive fix later this evening...
Comment 17 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-14 23:07:32 UTC
Ok, so hopefully third time lucky...

As usual, wait for the sync, then try re-emerging. Hopefully this patch will properly detect 2.6.25 kernel versions, and has been applied to all the dev_net locations, rather than just the one...

As ever, please let me know if there's any problems, or even if by some chance it works! 5:)

New kernel and this bug is back!
Kernel 2.6.28-hardened-r7 (amd64)

Same output as those posted before.

Petter, please file a new bug (first making sure yours isn't a duplicate of bug 264098), and then include the build output. Also note that the hardened sources/profile aren't officially supported, since no one on the vmware team (me) has a hardened system to run any tests against...

I've now successfully emerged vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r2 using linux-2.6.25-hardened-r13. The config of this kernel is as identical as posible to the one I used with linux-2.6.28-hardened-r7 when emerge failed.
I'm guessing the fix that will fix bug 264098 also will fix my problem.

For those who run into this, a workaround seems to be an older kernel.
