try emerge -av1 imagemagick I had the same problem: after upgrading imagemagick from 6.3.5.10 to 6.3.8.3-r1 openoffice failed to upgrade from 2.3.1 to 2.4.0. So downgrading imagemagick back to 6.3.5.10 allows openoffice-2.4.0 to compile. Found another bug concerning imagemagick http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212566 So it may be not necessary to downgrade imagemagick, but reemerge it, as after first emerge it may not leave correct binaries in /usr/bin. As i understood for openoffice 2.4.0 to compile the convert script must be workable. If your convert command works in bash, you wont get this error message during compile. I reemerged imagemagic as suggested and now OpenOffice is compiling. So this solution works for me. It still feels like a workarround and not a solution.
