With sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.9-r2, X starts without direct rendering
the first time at boot when xdm is in default runlevel.
The modules seem to load fine (in boot runlevel already).
Taking xdm out of the boot sequence and starting it from the shell
(both /etc/init.d/xdm start and startx) works fine,
all required modules are present.
When starting xdm via bootup, all modules are in either,
but no direct rendering. Killing the x-server once also helps.
I autoload i915 and video.
intel_agp, agpgart, drm get properly tied in.
Bug 177869 sounds somewhat similar to this one,
but there's plenty time between autoloading modules
and the switch to default runlevel.
