Please have the configure script ask for a mysql username rather than requiring
the mysql "root" user.

The root account is required only for dspam database setup (database creation,
dspam user creation, rights setup), it isn't used anywhere else by dspam.
Are you telling me your administrative MySQL account name is not root?

That is correct.  I never use the root user account and it does not have a
password set.  I believe that is uncommon, but most definitely isn't unique. 
In order to use the root account I have to take mysql offline and bring the
daemon back up without password authentication.

I re-opened it because I'm functionally illiterate from time to time.  Sorry
