"ddns-update-style ad-hoc;" - or some variant on that - is required for recent
versions of dhcpd to start. As of dhcp-3.0.3-r9 there's no such line in
dhcpd.conf.example, which causes dhcpd to fail to start.

I'd vote for "or some variant of that", considering that ad-hoc is deprecated
and does not work. "none" might be a good choice.

I used an update style of "none" which is in the example configs for 3.1
