I'm trying to use media-gfx/fbida versions 2.03-r4 and 2.05 witout X. Both compile fine, but when I try to run them I see only an error:

# fbi  image.jpg 
can't open font: monospace:size=16

Relevant use flags: -X curl fbcon gif jpeg -lirc -pdf png -tiff

I added a dependency on ttf-bitstream-vera, which should fix the problem. Thanks for reporting this issue.
