In the file /usr/lib/catalyst/modules/generic_stage_target.py at line 893 there is "\m" instead of "\n" (newline)

So the generated make.conf looks like this:
  [cut]
  # This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing.  You
  # should probably be using a different stage, instead.\mCHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
  [cut]
