There seems to be a typing error after the tetex useflag check in the octave 
ebuilds. I've had problems building octave without tetex... 
This should help: 
tetex ? -> tetex?

Strangely it seemed to work before..
Anyway I corrected this, please test.
BTW, other than that, did 2.1.40 build and work Ok?

I did try 2.1.36-r1 not 2.1.40, but I will look at it if I get some time over!
