Does it only work with HotU and SoU installed?  If so, then it'll only work
with my split ebuilds.  I have ebuilds written up for this, but can't test it
on the unsplit ebuilds, at this time.

There must not be many people using this, since I never got a response. 
Anyway, I've put in two revisions of 1.53 in the tree, depending on if you're
using the split or the monolithic ebuilds.  Anyway, hopefully the monolithic
ebuilds will be going away very shortly.
