in particular javaws is not currently available after emerge
=sun-jre-bin-1.5.06 or sun-jdk-1.5.06 on (~)amd64. this could be provided by
emulation.
is there an app that doesn't work with the jre provided by the current
emul-linux-x86-java package? if not i don't see any benefit from adding it to
the tree, and our policy has been to only package libraries/packages that are
really needed
the reason i asked is that i use two applications: topcoder's contest arena
(www.topcoder.com/tc) and wordbiz (www.isc.ro). topcoder needs javaws but
wordbiz runs a lot better and looks a lot better with java-1.5 (i'm using
sun's). 32-bit emulation of 1.5 would mean i only needed to install the one
java on my system - currently i need to have both sun-jre-bin (for wordbiz) and
blackdown-jdk (for javaws for topcoder) and need to run java-config every so
often to choose the right java to run...
amd64 team, if you add it, don't forget to keep it package.mask'ed
Could we take another look at this? There are many web sites that work well
with 1.5 but don't work with 1.4, some to the point of crashing
firefox/firefox-bin. Also, 1.5 is needed for openoffice.org.
In bug #78835 one of the reasons for not including a 32-bit 1.5 jre was the
imminent AMD64 support of openoffice.org, but 8 months later that's not here
yet. I had to do a manual, non-portage install to get 32-bit 1.5, think of how
many people have had to do this in the last 8 months!
I would prefer to work within Portage, not around it. Please reconsider this
decision.
Now that we have the new Java system, and a 1.5 JRE that can be
redistributed... this should be pretty easy, and implemented cleanly.
So, with the new license, we can redistribute cleanly. With the new Java
system, a user can use eselect java-nsplugin to set the system nsplugin as
emul-linux-x86-java-1.5
So, what is the status of this? Is anyone working on it, or... ?
I had started working on this recently. If all goes well, I hope to add
something in the next few days.
Added to portage as emul-linux-x86-java-1.5.0.08.
