wxPython refuses to upgrade on AMD64 because the latest stable 2.4 for AMD64 is
2.4.2.4:

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!

Won't help, you are missing stable keyword for the needed version (2.4.2.4-r3)
Reopened.
wxpython-2.4.2.4-r3 is properly slotted and wxpython-2.4.2.4 is not. For the
two to co-exist the slotted version (2.4.2.4-r3) must be used. I just resolved
this issue here, thanks marienz.
PS. I don't know that this is an AMD64 issue per se. If you have not upgraded
to the latest version of wxpython-2.4.* on x86 won't you still get bit?
Stabilizing wxpython-2.4.2.4-r3 would bring us to the same level as x86.
2.4.2.4-r3 it's stable This is fixed
