<thetext>What actions must be done to get Inkscape increased to 0.41? Is there
something I can do to help achieve this? Are there problems that need to be
resolved, or packaging that needs to be done?

Inkscape 0.37 is ancient, and it's troubling that Gentoo is still using it,
when other distros are at 0.40 and 0.41. 0.41 is *much* more stable than 0.37
and has a number of better features.

A couple months ago I worked on getting all of the Gentoo bugs listed against
Inkscape resolved, in hopes that would pave the way for moving from 0.37 to
0.41. Unfortunately, it still is at 0.37 even so.

I'm willing to put in some time if needed. We're starting on preparations for
the Inkscape 0.42 release, and I'd really like to get Gentoo up to at least
0.41, so if there are bugs to be fixed, or packaging to be done, or whatever,
I'd be happy to help.

<thetext>Can't be keyworded stable as we only have media-gfx/pstoedit-3.40 keyworded
(~amd64), and can't stabilise on that until the maintainer arch does. I have
been using inkscape-0.41 for several weeks with no issues on amd64, but haven't
been using the plugins very much as yet.</thetext>

<thetext>The plug-ins are optional requirements, so if the user does not have pstoedit
installed, inkscape will still function properly, just with fewer features.
Specifically, Adobe Illustrator output, and Postscript output.

While the functionality pstoedit provides is important to many users, it's
only loosely coupled to Inkscape, and can be upgraded completely
independently. It's a run-time dependency detected by Inkscape on the fly
rather than a link-time dependency. If the lack of a stable pstoedit is
hindering making Inkscape 0.41 stable, you could remove it as a dependency for
Inkscape. Then, if the user installs it independently, inkscape will pick it
up. Later, when pstoedit does stabilize, you can re-add it as a dependency.

<thetext>It looks like pstoedit 3.33 is stable - perhaps Inkscape could be made
dependent on that version instead of 3.40? </thetext>

<thetext>I think you misundertand the problem slightly. Only media-gfx/pstoedit-3.40 has
the ~amd64 keyword. All previous versions are totally untested on amd64, and so
could not be stabilised. Once the maintainer marks 3.40 stable, I can go ahead
and mark that stable on amd64 as there are no bugs I know about.

Gentoo policy is that all deps for a stable package must be stable, and
packages should usually have been in ~amd64 (or whatever testing branch) for at
least one month before being stabilised. Removing pstoedit as a dep would allow
me to mark inkscape-0.41 stable, or stabilising pstoedit-3.40. </thetext>

<thetext>Ah, I understand. But for stabilizing inkscape x86, this should not be an
issue? </thetext>

<thetext>Totally unrelated - x86 and amd64 have different stable trees and their dep
