Notably, desktop-file-utils-0.9 (http://freedesktop.org/Software/desktop-file-utils/releases/desktop-file-utils-0.9.tar.gz) seems to work fine; the fdo site mentions that 0.9 has "Many update-desktop-database improvements (Ray Strode, Dan Williams)". Perhaps it's time for a new ebuild?
