Any future call to distcc-config --set-hosts "whatever" modifies /etc/distcc/hosts leaving /etc/env.d/02distcc intact. A user would only know that their host settings had been overridden by checking the output of "export |grep DISTCC". Further, fixing the problem requires intimate knowledge of /etc/env.d, /etc/profile and /etc/profile.env and their workings.
