error if I set MAKEOPTS=&quot;-j4&quot;. Setting MAKEOPTS=&quot;-j1&quot; solves the problem.</thetext>

            <thetext>with -j8 on x86, I get

make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

-j1 works fine.  This is gconf 2.8.1 on x86.
