<thetext>As was already discussed on gentoo-dev, the use of cp -a in ebuilds make them
incompatible with BSD and Darwin userlands, where -a option is not present
(it's a GNUism).
The syntax that should be used is cp -pPR that's the same without -d (that
doesn't exists on BSD, but should not be needed in normal operations).

Please update your ebuild to not use cp -a. The following (last + last
unmasked) ebuilds needs to be fixed (I'll take care of the ebuilds for the
herds I'm in and for unmaintained ebuilds).
This time the names of maintainers and herds are referred near the packages.

Please note: while it's true that there are a few "linux only" packages
listed, you'll never know if someday we'll have BSD userland on Linux kernel
and so on... The change is minimal and makes cp POSIX compatible.

Thanks,

> cp --recursive --preserve=timestamps source target

According to the FreeBSD man page
(http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=cp&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+5.4-RELEASE+and+Ports&format=html):

cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-f | -i | -n] [-pv] source_file target_file

As far as I'm concerned, anything in that list that's also accepted by GNU cp is
acceptable ( from what I can tell, Darwin's cp is the same in its accepted
options, and the list is pretty much standard ). Anything that isn't is liable
to break.</thetext>

Re: Comment #44: it's probably due to a false-false positive: the script
recognize --parents as -a right now. This doesn't mean that it's safe to use,
but right now I don't have a drop-in replacement handy. Probably an eutils
function should be added to handle that. </thetext>

For toolchain and other linux-only packages: I can probably make the checker
ignore those packages, but for the sake of crosscompiling, can them be fixed
anyway? This also makes less error-prone the tree, as noone can mime something
that is not there :) </thetext>
