It's a known issue that the rt2500 module doesn't support SMP.  From the
CHANGELOG in the source tarball:

CURRENTLY NOT SUPPORTED
        * SMP Processors and Kernels (1099089)
        * USB rt2500 devices (1090960)
        * Bridging with other interfaces

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.  emerge rt2500 with an SMP kernel

Actual Results:  
emerge allowed

Expected Results:  
Forbid the installation or at least a warning about SMP not being supported by
the module
