Description:   Opened: 2005-05-15 05:41 0000
Adobe published different language versions of the Reader in version 7.0, e.g.
german and french, for the first time.

Is it possible that acroread-7.0 in portage uses the language dependent
versions? For example through the variable LANGUAGE or LINGUAS?

Furthermore the Adobe Acrobat Reader is named Adobe Reader, since version 7.0.
It is possible to change the portage name to the new name, e.g. adobe-reader???

------- Comment #1 From Stefan Schweizer 2005-05-15 05:58:42 0000 -------
is there really need in you opinion to rename it? I think that would cause more
problems then it solves ..
And for linguas: We can use kpdf if we really need a german interface :)

Also how would you do it for acroread?
I have LINGUAS="de en", so when I would add linguas, that would make an
additional 40MB download, despite I can only use one language at a time, it
wouldd download both, do you think that is desireable?
Or can you think of any way to avoid said problem?

Comment #1: It´s exactly why there are no localized version for openoffice-bin
in portage (Bug 44944). Also, as mentioned there, localized versions are
available later than the english ones, so there would be problems with
upgrades.

------- Comment #4 From Stefan Tittel 2005-05-15 07:59:58 0000 -------
We could just bypass the whole issue, if we'd create language specific ebuilds,
e.g. acroread-german, acroread-french etc.

This would also solve the problem of what to do, when a new Adobe Reader
version arrives, which (at first) will probably only be available in English.

Providing no localized ebuild of app-office/openoffice-bin is not an issue,
because app-office/openoffice is an offical alternative, which supports
localized builds. However, the adobe reader is an essential piece of software
for a lot of users and Gentoo does not provide a localized version at all.

------- Comment #5 From tuXXer 2005-05-15 08:27:58 0000 -------
Well, separate ebuild are good. But I think a name scheme like in other
distries are goog, e.g. adobe-reader and adobe-reader-de adobe-reader-fr.
Furthermore if it is possible splitting of packages to adobe-reader-common
(file needed by all languages) and adobe-reader-de adobe-reader-en aso. would
be nice... Then the overhead is eventually not so high...

------- Comment #6 From Stefan Schweizer 2005-05-15 08:33:14 0000 -------
openoffioce-bin-1.9.* has localization support
and mozilla-firefox-bin-1.1 will have it, there is a bug

As for splitting it up, do you know if the license permits that?
Do other distributions do that?
Can we maybe get the needed files from them?

------- Comment #7 From Heinrich Wendel (RETIRED) 2005-05-15 08:36:43 0000 -------
this comment might not be very productive, but splitting up is a very bad idea.
it creates a maintaince nightmear and works against making the LINGUAS stuff
working the same in each package

------- Comment #8 From tuXXer 2005-05-15 09:04:22 0000 -------
Well, to the three points

openoffice-bin: Debian and Debian-based distries using a splitting into openoffice.org-bin and openoffice.org-l10n-... That means the openoffice.org-bin packages includes the binaries and the english language files. The openoffice.org-l10n-...-packages the special language files. I don't know if the OOo-license includes this.

mozilla/mozilla-firefox: In my opinion no problems. Mozilla offers for each browser and each version linux compatible XPI language files. Look at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0.4/linux-i686/xpi/
When it is possible to install this files with ebuilds => no problem depending on a variable "LANGUAGES" or what ever the XPI file are installed and could be used...

adobe-reader: I don't know how to split it, because there are no language versions are available, before. Therefore I don't know if the license includes that, either.

------- Comment #9 From tuXXer 2005-05-15 09:07:56 0000 -------
Oops, didn't got that firefox and openoffice-bin supports language file in
portage. Sorry. Please ignore the comments to both...

------- Comment #10 From Rafael Kolless 2005-05-16 01:43:46 0000 -------
the acreula say that you may start the installer of acroread within your own
installer (http://www.adobe.com/support/salesdocs/1007846.html) or distributed
own help files and pdfs within the installer.

But could there be a local useflag like "acrode" to fetch the localized reader
in german?

------- Comment #11 From tuXXer 2005-05-16 06:22:08 0000 -------
When I getting it right... that means that the installer can be invoked by the
own installer, but repack the installer or parts of the package are not
allowed... The only way then is to fetch the installer files language
dependend... Local use flags are the best way, IMHO... Or is an other solution
possible?

Created an attachment (id=59018) [details]
acroread.diff

OK, can you please try this out and tell me if it works for you?
It will download only english, german or french but not two at the same time.

------- Comment #13 From tuXXer 2005-05-16 13:47:54 0000 -------
Thank you for the patch. I'm trying it as soon as possible (my wife was brought
to hospital today and I must take care of my children, so it could take 2-3
days. I'm very sorry...)

------- Comment #14 From Stefan Schweizer 2005-05-18 00:42:05 0000 -------
thanks, fixed

------- Comment #15 From Giacomo Perale 2005-05-18 11:01:27 0000 -------
Hello.
I'm sorry but there is a problem here. LINGUAS can be set to more than one
languages: for example, I'm Italian but I actually use "it en fr de". Other
programs in portage that use this variable favour the language listed in first
place (it) and eventually they fall back to the second if the first is
unsupported, and then to the third, etc.etc.
On the contrary with this ebuild, if I understand correctly, I'm going to
install just the German version.

------- Comment #16 From Stefan Schweizer 2005-05-18 11:05:00 0000 -------
If you can suggest a patch to do so, then I would love to apply it. But as
every
version starts up with english per default I think it should work for your
combination anyway.

The problem for me is, that I would have to download every 40MB tarball to
support your request, because use-flags are not ordered :(

Stefan - can´t you just steal it ;-) from openoffice so that the leftmost
supported value takes precedence?

------- Comment #19 From Mark Purtill 2005-07-02 11:08:27 0000 -------
The japanese version does not start in English for me (and all my language
environment variables are set to en_US.UTF-8). According to bug #97401, some of
the other language versions do not either.
