Description Jason Harmening 2005-03-06 01:00:52 UTC
I just upgraded from kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r7 (amd64) to 2.6.11-gentoo-r2, and am now having a strange problem with my sound system. I have a 4-speaker system attached to the ALC850 audio controller integrated into my mobo (Asus A8V Deluxe), and am using the VIA 82xxx ALSA (1.08) driver built into the kernel. I have the 'duplicate front channel' option selected in my mixer, but I am only getting sound from THREE of the four speakers--i'm missing the right rear. I've checked alsamixer to make sure both left and right rear are at full volume and unmuted, and I've emerged the latest version of the alsa userland (in my case just alsa-utils 1.08 and alsaplayer). This problem does not occur with any 2.6.10 or earlier kernel that I try, but it does occur with both 2.6.11-gentoo-r2 and vanilla 2.6.11. It also occurs with both alsaplayer and arts-based applications like noatun and the KDE sound system. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason Harmening

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot into a 2.6.11 kernel from development-sources or gentoo-dev-sources
2.Play any audio file

Actual Results:
Sound comes from both front speakers but only left rear speaker. All four
speakers work in 2.6.10 and earlier.

Expected Results:
Emit sound through all four speakers.

not a cable problem? :)

Strange, I have this problem on completely different hardware. It works fine again in 2.6.11-mm3. Trying to find the specific fix...
