In the package gentoo-artwork there is an offensive image. The file name is gentoo-revolution-1024x768.png and it reproduces the portraits of Lenin, Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. It is my opinion that this is very offensive image because of the atrocities that the individuals above mentioned caused to people of many countries. I think that that image has to be eliminated from the package or, at least, that the flag "offensive" has to be enabled so that if someone doesn't want to install it, he doesn't have to. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. The only thing you have to do is emerge gentoo-artwork. The offensive image is /usr/share/pixmaps/gentoo/1024x768/gentoo-revolution-1024x768.png
OMG. Please stop this Debian-like wannabe political correctness. :-( P.S. Fix it yourself: rm -f /usr/share/pixmaps/gentoo/1024x768/gentoo-revolution-1024x768.png
Um, feeling offended by some innocent pixels is just rediculous. Indeed problematic is, that "Gentoo" appears in the package and filename. Since gentoo-artwork sounds somewhat official, this image should be removed, imho. Same for all other politicians, rebels or whatever states a political message.
I strongly disagree with removing any images from the package unless they are _illegal_. This really resembles the infamous Debian vs. Hot Base "case". If anything must be done, them rename the ebuild. If someone feels offended by some depiction of penguin satirizing Microsoft, shall that picture be removed as well? Who is going to judge what _exactly_ is offensive?
<<If someone feels offended by some depiction of penguin satirizing Microsoft, shall that picture be removed as well?>> You said well, but here the fact is not a common satirizing picture, this is a picture of dictators and assassins, not a penguin that jokes a window, but a picture of individuals that killed and enslaved a lot of poor people. gentoo-artwork is the main gentoo theme package and I think that it shouldn't include such a picture. If someone is happy to have a picture of a criminal on his desktop, he's free to have it, but it shouldn't be part of a gentoo theme package.
OK, so uninstall the ebuild. I think that George W. Bush is a criminal but I don
OK, so uninstall the ebuild. I think that George W. Bush is a criminal but I don´t demand that TV stations deny his existence. I think that that Fidel Castro is a criminal, but I think that you don´t understand parody and have zero sense of humour. Please read this article - http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=04/12/27/1535248&tid=150 You are trying to introduce censorship in Gentoo and this is a _bad_ thing. :-/
I 2nd that! Judging who is "good" and who is "bad" is not up to me or anyone else from Gentoo (IMHO). offensive use flag may be a good solution if someone feels offended but removal? Are you kidding? That would be censorship! BTW, I was going to use the "Bush is the bad guy" thing but Jakub was faster... :-)
'offensive' USE flag added as requested - closing.
Something is still wrong. I'm offended by this usage of the offensive flag, could we add it to this bug?
I strongly disagree with this decision, I ask that the remotion of the use-flag offensive
Niklas: Bingo! Otherwise: what shall be considered offensive next time? Could the maintainer give reasons for this decision? :-(
The reasons are given in the first bug comment: "this is very offensive image because of the atrocities that the individuals above mentioned caused to people of many countries". While you might live in a country where people didn't experience these atrocities, others might not, and they might be offended. The USE flag description says: "Enables potentially offensive items in packages", and I say this is indeed *potentially* offensive. If you are offended by the USE flag itself, I sympathize, but it's going to stay as it is. I guess this means: "removal request denied".
Hmm, to make things a little more clear, I live in the Czech Republic (see email address). Your name looks like Polish. Surprisingly, neither me or you seem to be offended despite the history of these two countries. I really think that this flag (if it is needed at all) should be reserved for clear cases of profanity as in fortunes and not to censor innocent pixels.
Since this is turning into a policy discussion I propose that we turn it to this thread so we won't further spam the bugzilla: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-301543-highlight-.html
